While life carried on in normal
fashion, on our side of the fence
We had no idea that behind the
door next to ours
Our neighbour was fighting for
his life;
A quiet, shy man—his headaches
came on suddenly, drove him into the
hospital with a permanence that was
flat-out shocking
The fact that he was dying one floor
away from my mother, in the same
hospital at the same time did not become
apparent until weeks after the fact
A postscript to sadness long regretted
